I made this shawl for my daughter for Christmas 2013. I decided against finishing with fringe, which would have been more gypsy-like, since we have cats that like to play with anything that dangles. While amusing, walking around with a cat hanging off your clothes makes everything more difficult. Hysterical, but difficult.

I think this is the first pattern I’ve tried to write myself, so please let me know if it’s confusing or missing anything.

Gypsy Shawl

Yarn: Worsted Weight (I used Red Heart Black, Dark Orchid, and Heather)
Hook Size: K

Chain 5

Row 1: In fifth chain – 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc

Row 2: ch 4, turn,2 dc in first dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in center ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in end chain

Row 3: ch 4, turn, 2 dc in first dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, repeat to center ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in center ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, repeat to end 3 dc in end chain

Row 4+ repeat Row 3 until desired length

Finish: There are several ways to edge the shawl depending on the look you desire. I did this: 2 dc in first dc, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, repeat to center ch 2 space, in center 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2 3 dc, after center 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space, repeat to end, 3 dc in end chain

You can also add poms or fringe if you like.

In the shawl pictured, I changed colors every three rows, but you can change as often or seldom as desired.

Here is a great video explaining how to change colors.
